Past Projects

2014 - 2015

Isla Vista United: Isla Vista United is a student-created group aiming towards improving morale in Isla Vista, and involving the entire residential community in order to create a safer and better mental and physical environment.

Students for a Safer Isla Vista (SFSIV): Working in close alliance with the Associated Students Office for Public Safety, Students for a Safer Isla Vista aims to provide residents of the Isla Vista area with a higher quality of living through the best possible public resource distribution and allocation.  It is a necessity that everyone who lives in a community feels safe and accepted, and SFSIV will strive to provide this environment.

Fence Isla Vista: “Fence Isla Vista” aims to better protect Isla Vista residents and visitors by improving current fencing safety along the cliffs on Del Playa. Far too many people have been seriously injured or killed due to improper fencing standards, especially within the last school year alone.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is designed to help communities prepare for effective disaster response through training and planning. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. With training and information, individual and community groups can be prepared to serve as a crucial resource capable of performing many of the emergency functions needed in the immediate post-disaster period. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; provide first aid and basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

2015-2016

AS Halloween Planning: During this Halloween creating a list of safety tips to be distributed to students, handled acquisition of Porta-Potties and water stations. In general, working with AS as a whole and closely with the EVPLA office on how to handle safety information for students and the organization of a volunteer group to increase student safety and healthy community policing examples.

AS Deltopia Planning: This time focusing on discussing with police how they will be handing the influx of people during Deltopia and organizing volunteers from afternoon till evening to increase community safety. Similar to Halloween, working with AS as a whole and closely with the EVPLA office on how to handle safety information for students and the organization of a volunteer group to increase student safety and healthy community policing examples.

UCIV: A student run volunteer program created during 2015s Deltopia and expanded upon during 2015s Halloween, which acts a intermediary force between students and police. They also have water stations throughout Isla Vista, find and assist those who need emergency medical attention, and warn students about various ordinances that they may be unaware of.

FEMA Planning: IV lacks key emergency evacuation plans, so the IV Liaison of PSC has been working with the county FEMA rep to create safety plans and warn students about some the supplies they’ll need during upcoming natural disasters such as El Niño.

CPR Hands Only Certification: An event which gave students the opportunity to gain their hands-only CPR certifications from an AMR paramedic.

Pizza With The Police: A recurring event hosted at Pizza My Heart where PSC co-hosts a pizza night with IVFP and/or UCPD to give students the chance to interact with officers at a more casual level and have some of their questions pertaining to law enforcement answered.

Reverse Trick Or Treating: During Halloween, volunteers along with police go door to door in Isla Vista to warn them about ordinances that will be put in place, traffics and parking warnings, and give students a chance to discuss with police how Halloween weekend will affect them.
